I have had the most fun reading aloud the following chapter book selections to my children's literature students: The Trolls by Polly Horvath (Chapter 3 titled "Greens!"), Knights of the Kitchen Table by Jon Scieszka (Chapter 3), and a couple of chapters from the Sachar's Wayside series, most notably the chapter titled "Poetry" and the chapter where Leslie's pigtails get pulled (I'm sorry I don't have those two books with me right now).
I read them several picture books, too. Latest favorites include: I Stink, The Web Files (we actually do this as a reader's theater in class), Widget, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and many, many more.
I've been reading the following short stories aloud to my Literature for Adolescents class: Am I Blue by Bruce Coville, First French Kiss by Adam Bagdasarian, Ironman by Chris Crutcher pp. 251 (after hearing Crutcher read it on campus here when it was first published).
I also read and recite a lot of poetry in both classes.

I would be really interested in hearing from others who teach children's
literature courses what picturebooks and novel chapters they have used as read alouds. There is just not time for full novel read alouds, but I would love to find some stand alone chapters that would introduce a novel or an author.
