I sent to my sister-in-law, Julie, the link for Billy Collins' Poetry 180 (http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/), and she sent back the following. My nieces are in an immersion school in Seattle in which half of each grade is Spanish language immersion, the other Japanese. Julie, an artist and poetry-lover, volunteers in various capacities at the school, and it turns out that she will be volunteering a poetry program with a similar format to poetry 180 this fall! She permitted me to cut and paste from her post to share with the list:
The principal has given me permission to do it once a week, which is great thing, considering the p.a. system is not used for morning announcements, so this will be a new thing to the school. My idea is to incorporate many Japanese and Latino poems and h ave fourth and fifth graders read them in those languages, as well as the English translation. I also want to include poems from other cultures as well as some of the classics. I'm going to have each week's poem published in the school newsletter so paren ts have an opportunity to read and possibly discuss them with their children. I'm excited about it.
