Megan mentioned Junie B. Jones as a preschool chapter-book read-aloud. I've noticed recently that many parents first read-aloud books like Junie B. Jones and The Magic Tree House series that will later become their children's first read-alone chapter books. Another series that I've seen get similar treatment by teachers is The Stories Julian Tells (and its successors) by Ann Cameron. I've also seen kindergarten teachers share the first book in The Box Car Children series with children.

Like other CCBC-networkers, the first chapter book I read to my son was My Father's Dragon and it was beloved. Many K, first and second grade teachers still read the books in this series aloud to their students and I always see great demand for them in the library. A book in a similar vein is A Toad for Tuesday by Russell Erickson (it's been called "a miniature Wind in the Willows). And just about anything by Roald Dahl reminds wildy popular with both teachers and primary grade students as a read-aloud.
