I am enjoying the discussion on read alouds. When I was a teacher, I used Virginia Hamilton's, The People Could Fly, with sixth graders who had reading problems. How they loved listening to those stories, especially "The Peculiar Such Thing." I can still hear them repeating the refrain "Tailypo, tailypo. Give me back my tailypo." We were also fortunate enough to have a wonderful audio tape of the tales, narrated by Virginia Hamilton and James Earl Jones.
100 years ago when I was in the second grade, my teacher read to us The Wind in the Willows and I can still recall how much I looked forward to hearing those stories. My all time favorite though was Alice in Wonderland. My mother read it to me before I had learned how to read. She confessed when I was an adult that she never understood why I loved that story, but being a patient and loving mother she never refused to to read it to me over and over and over again. I have loved books and reading ever since. Joyce Hansen
