During the class I teach for adults thinking about writing picture books for children, I introduce a wide range of picture books and do lots of reading aloud. Some of the favorites include The Gardener by Sarah Stewart and David Small, The Three Pigs by David Wiesner, Lily's Purple Plastic Purse by Henkes, Cronin's Click, Clack, Moo, Fleming's Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!, Pinkney's Max Found Two Sticks, Angela Johnson's When I am old with you, the McMullans' I Stink, Wilson's Bear Snores On, Keat's Whistle for Willie, Root and Hillenbrand's Kiss the Cow, Hughes' Alfie Gets in First, Appelt's Bubba and Beau Best Friends, Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, and many others.
I always (so far anyway) start with The Gardener. Students are mesmerized and discussion and excitement flow as they share their reactions as listeners and then as critics.
Thanks for this month's discussion.
