Read-Alouds: No thank-you?

My read-aloud rules were a bit different from Monica's. Drawing, sewing, or knitting were permitted (leading to the glorious astonishment of our school head when he opened the door one day to see the class at my feet and 5 boys knitting -- but that craze didn't last long). The only children I remember appearing not to enjoy the experience were students whose English wasn't up to the level of my reading and one girl for whom auditory processing was clearly difficult. In all those cases, I felt that the sound of the correctly spoken (I hope) words would be helpful in some way. They tended to draw or fiddle with things around the edges of the group, not in a distracting way but in a way that showed me that they were distracted. Our students are quick to complain, but no one ever did and in end-of-year evaluations my sixth graders often mentioned how much they had enjoyed the time; sometimes a book I read aloud turned out to be their favorite.
