Dick King-Smith's Sophie books

The mention of Dick King-Smith reminded me how much my kids enjoyed his Sophie series when they were small. They are very funny chapter books which follow Sophie from a 3-year-old up through about age 9 or 10. They are great read-alouds for preschoolers.
The Lois Lowry "Sam" books can work well, too.
