My 6th grade teacher read us a wonderful book called GABRIEL AND THE HOUR BOOK, about a young monk. I don't remember the story (or the author), but I do remember being enthralled.
My beloved great aunt, Tanna, read aloud to me most of one summer while I was having and getting over scarlet fever. I was reading Kipling's Jungle Books then, and I think she read parts of them to me. We were a "read aloud" family; I remember many warm summer nights sitting on the porch in the growing darkness reading aloud and listening to my parents and Tanna read aloud -- and at my aunt's lakeside cabin, listening to my uncle -- a minister with a gorgeous voice -- read as well. I shall never forget his rendition of Kipling's JUST SO Stories, especially "The Elephant's Child."
And when I was a teenager and a friend's family discovered that somehow I'd never managed to read CHARLOTTE'S WEB, they immediately pluinked me down in their kitchen and read it to me!
