No there is not time to read aloud a whole book but I do begin every class reading aloud. Students soon find out that if they are late, they are missing out. I read aloud a bit to give the flavor of the book or to talk about what grabs me and makes me want to read more. Riveting first pages include What Jamie Saw, by Carolyn Coman
" When Jamie saw him throw the baby, saw Van throw the little baby, saw Van throw his little sister Nin, when Jamie saw Van throw his baby sister Nin, then they moved."
Stop Pretending, The first poem of Amber and Essie, The Trolls, Katherine Called Birdy, Witch Child by Celia Rees and The Knights of the Kitchen Table.
I also read aloud non-fiction to demonstrate how good writing makes all the difference. Most recently The Tarantula Scientist by Sy Montgomery but also Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery by Russell Freedman and Walter Wick's Water.
On the picture book front I always read aloud My Little Sister Ate One Hare. It is a masterpiece of timing , rhythm and rhyme.
