For many years I read SEEDFOLKS by Fleischman. One class created a quilt with me of the story's characters... a square of cloth desiged by a pair of students. I attached the squares to the backing and it hung in the hall of my college for many years. Also, at the end of each semester, students wrote letters to Fleischman talking about which was their favorite character and why.
This past fall, I worked with a regional library to produce a readers' theatre production of this most amazing book. Thirteen characters, one for each chapter. Students created mobiles, did clay figures, wrote poetry, and did collages as interpretaions of their characters as well. The evening performance (happily) went without a hitch. Lots of work but well worth the effort. If anyone is interested in this project, I'm happy to talk about it individually.
And if you haven't read SEEDFOLKS, run/don't walk to the library...a book most treasured in my collection.
