For young kids, it's hard to beat Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley, or Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin et al, especially if you bring in a real coconut. I've had two year olds memorize the monster book and recite it back to me.
I think Don't let the pigeon drive the bus by Mo Willems is about to become a classic for the slightly older child.
