Read-alouds

Family favorites in my childhood included The Wide-Awake Angel (author unknown) and The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes (Dubose Heyward). They were read so many times that favorite lines would be repeated by family members. If someone was late going to bed, Mom would say "My little bunny is a sleepyhead bunny, and you should be sleeping yourself".
As a librarian, two favorite read-alouds have always been May I Bring a Friend? (Beatrice Schenk de Regniers) and A House Is a House For Me (Mary Ann Hoberman). The final lines always give me shivers...."Every creature that's known has a house of its own...And the earth is a house for us all!"
When Roald Dahl's The BFG was first published, I put signs all around the middle school "The BFG is coming!!" Who or what the BFG was a big mystery until the appointed day when I began daily lunchtime read-aloud sessions to share the new book. Since I had only 15-minutes to read and wanted to stop in approrpiate places in the plot, I prepared by reading the preceeding night to my then 8th-grade daughter. At first I thought she was doing me a favor by listening....but soon she was imploring me to continue beyond the 15-minute reading!
I once read that immigrant women working in a cigar factory increased their quota of work in order to have one of their number read aloud to them. It relieved the boredom of piecework and improved their knowledge of English. So...we really are never too old to enjoy reading aloud.
