Two books that I think would be great for middle/high school read aloud are:
Swimming to Antarctica- Lynne Cox
and On the Water: Discovering America in a Rowboat by Nat Stone.
Both are non-fiction and would make great social studies/geography curriculum connections. I think both are well written and full of adventure. Thought provoking too.
Lynne Cox swam the English Channel at age 14 or 15 then went to do swims in the Bering Strait, and eventually in 32 degree water in Antarctica. English Channel rules- no wetsuit for any of these swims!
Nat Stone rowed from Manhattan, through the Erie Canal, Lake Erie- portaged to the Ohio River, then to the Mississippi, to the Gulf of Mexico. He gets a different boat and goes from the gulf around FL and up the Atlantic coast.
Enjoy!
