Hi!

Our grandchildren (ages 9 1/2 and 7 1/2; grades 4 and 2) spent last week with us. I read 3 books to them that they greatly enjoyed:

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr
A short chapter book, this is about a Japanese girl who loves to run. She hopes to be on the school team. It's the story of her having radiation sickness
(leukemia) as a result of her living in Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped. It's the story of her, her friends, her family, a little about the war, and the legend of the thousand paper cranes still observed in Japan at the Peace Day statue of Sadako. We also folded paper cranes.

I have read this book aloud to 5th graders and then taught them to fold paper cranes; we folded a thousand paper cranes and hung them from the ceiling of the library. It takes a little practice to learn to fold them, but it's worth it. Kids loved it.

Owls in the Family by Farley Mowatt
Another short chapter-type book about a boy in Canada who has 2 owls to come live with him and his menagerie. Very funny parts with his adventures kept them laughing. Mowatt also wrote Never Cry Wolf about the Arctic wilderness and other titles.

Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls (author of Where the Red Fern Grows)
A boy in Oklahoma finds escaped monkeys from a circus in the river bottoms. He wants to catch them for a big reward. His trials and tribulations are funny and keeps you turning the pages. It also has its serious moments with a good message. My grandson asked me constantly to read more, even wanting me to read while I was eating my supper! Lots of fun!

These books will appeal to all ages.
