Dear Colleagues, I am sitting in my little library in La Lima, Honduras attempting to set up a reader's and writer's workshop, a read-aloud program throughout the Nursery-grade 8 school, and figure out how to replace the torn and tattered books with some appealing new bo oks such as the ones being listed in this lively discussion.
Our school opened on Wednesday and my great hit of the week has been reading Pleasing the Ghost by Sharon Creech, a book I fortunately brought in my luggage, to grade 4. I have read this book to fourth grade in Trinidad, Bangladesh, Madison, and now Hondu ras, and it is one of the most satisfying books for kids this age. Whether it is Dennis's yearning to make contact with his dead father, or the slap-stick nature of the ghosts, it gets right into kids' hearts as Sharon Creech can do.
Thank you for the marvelous suggestions that have been listed this month. I am compiling next year's list and only wish there was a bookstore within reach.
Keep those titles coming. susan bickley librarian, Escuela Internacional La Lima, Honduras
