Our librarian group recently did a similar sharing and since I have my suggestions all typed up, here they are.

All of these have wonderful use of language, many using repetition to advantage. Almost anything by Polacco can be used with older kids, but I like "Mr Faulker" because of the empathy it encourages. When I ask the kids to use the "problem" of the book to help discover the theme, they usually come up with 3-5 great ideas. Moments that make me love teaching. (Thus compensating for other moments.)
