I have read The Birchbark House by L. Erdrich to fourth graders several times. Although some students find the book to be a little slow at the beginning, by the middle of the book everyone is fully engaged. Fifth and sixth graders stopping by the library often reminisce fondly about the story. (I think this book would work just as well for fifth graders. I use it in four because that is where we study Native Americans.)
