stories out loud

Carolyn,

I want to thank you for your post. My grandmother recently moved into a nursing home in Michigan, some 2500 miles from where we live. She was once a lovely singer, but has little voice following a stroke. Music is still her passion. Another family member brought her a boombox, and I will send some cd compilations... but I had thought to read some stories too.

My first thought was Berlie Doherty's work (Granny was a Buffer Girl, White Peak Farm or Daughter of the Sea). My nana would enjoy stories that are lilting, lyrical -- language with the feel of music -- and stories that are evocative of place and time. (Midnight Man is a perfect picture book example.) Does anyone have other similar children's/ya suggestions to tape for an elder woman? Feel free to email me offlist if that seems more appropriate!

Thanks, Maia
