Read Alouds

Since the first half of the month is meant for our discussion of great read-alouds for young children (my favorite age group!) I'll jump in here. One of my current favorites...probably because it's my 2 year old nephew's favorite...is I Stink! He gets the biggest kick out of reading about the "car-bge truk"...perfect topic for a very active, very car/truck/motorized-vehicle-of-any-kind little boy.
I also happen to teach future educators, and open every single class session with a different read-aloud. I've done this for years now, and every semester I get comments from my college students about how much they enjoy being read to. When students come back to visit, they often say things like "oh! I tried using that book you read to us with my class of kindergarteners and they just loved it!!" Some selections I tie in directly to our topic for the day, but more often than not, I simply share some of my favorites. I'll list just a handful here.
Kevin Henkes' mouse Lilly in all her adventures...Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Chester's Way (where we first meet Lilly), Julius Baby of the World...is probably my all time favorite character. Of course, just about any Kevin Henkes picture book is going to be a big hit with the younger crowd. Ian Falconer's Olivia books are another favorite (my 5 year old niece thinks Olivia is FABULOUS), as is Mo Willems' Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Diary of A Worm by Doreen Cronin, Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini (who can resist doing the witchy voice?!), Oh No, Gotta Go! by Susan Middleton Elya, and My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Bill Grossman are also just plain FUN to read aloud.
For me, the key to a good read aloud is the flow of the language...with some books it's the rhythm or cadence, with others it's the humor, still others it's the beauty of the sound of the words themselves...some books just seem to beg to be shared aloud. You get caught up in the moment...and with some books you turn to whoever happens to be in close proximity to you (in the living room or the office or the bookstore...family, friend or perfect stranger!) and say, "Oh! You've just GOT to listen to THIS!!"

Please continue to post any announcement you have for the CCBC-Net community.

Tomorrow, we'll turn our attention to the August CCBC-Net topic:

Great Read-Alouds: What makes a book a great read-aloud? What are some of your favorite books to share this way? In August, we'll focus on terrific read alouds for children. We'll spend the first half of the month talking about books for young children (Pre-K to Grade 2). In mid-August, we'll shift our focus to great read-alouds for older kids
(Grades 3-6).
