A good conversation about this most important part of reading, writing, and storying. Wanted to say how important this process of reading aloud is for prospective teachers... something I always spent a good deal of time with when teaching in the college arena. I still do workshops occasionally on reading aloud to teachers and librarians who want to know the "how" as well as the what.
Another area, though, perhaps not discussed here, is the importance of reading aloud to grown-ups -- in particular, seniors. My mother is in the dying process, and is almost totally blind. For her, the books on tape, and having regular "readers" come to her room make all the difference. She just called and asked me to come today to do some reading -- to bring a book from my children's collection.
I have read poetry into tapes and given the tapes as holiday gifts ... and continue to do so, learning even more about the poetry as I read it aloud. Last year, a dear friend died of cancer and in his final weeks, I took poetry to read regularly.
Just some thoughts for the discussion.
