read alouds

While I have very few memories of my parents reading to me, my aunt did, and this helped forge a bond that was almost as intense as a parent-child one. With my own children, we began reading when they were infants and by age four, my son, Rob, and I were enjoying Charlotte's Web together. Both my husband and I continued to read aloud to him all the way through elementary school. I read the entire Narnia series and Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series to him. Those are the books he has kept now that he is about grown. Interestingly, my daughter never really liked reading my reading to her once she outgrew picture books, so we did less of it, and I missed it very much.

When I was working in public libraries, I always tried to encourage parents to try a chapter book with their older preschool children. They would come back for more suggestions because they found it to be a great experience for all.
