Please mark your calendars. The ceremony for the 2004 Jane Addams Children's Book Awards will be held on Friday, October 22, 2004,1:30, at 777 United Nations Plaza, New York City. This 51st celebration of these awards to books on peace, justice, community, and equality is open to all who are interested. This year's winner in the Picture Book category is Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez, written by Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Yuyi Morales, published by Harcourt Children's Books.
In the Books for Older Children category, the winner is Out of Bounds: Seven Stories of Conflict and Hope, by Beverley Naidoo, published by HarperCollins Children's Books. Honor books in the Picture Book category are Luba: The Angel of Bergen?lsen, as told to author Michelle McCann by Luba Tryszynska-Frederick, illustrated by Ann Marshall, published by Tricycle Press and Girl Wonder: A Baseball Story in Nine Innings, written by Deborah Hopkinson, illustrated by Terry Widener.
In the category of Honor Books for Older Children, two books were named: Getting Away with Murder: The True Story of the Emmett Till Case by Chris Crowe and Shutting Out the Sky: Life in the Tenements of New York 118024, by Deborah Hopkinson.
This year, a Special Commendation is being awarded to The Breadwinner Trilogy, three books by Deborah Ellis (The Breadwinner, Parvana's Journey, and Mud City) published by Groundwood Book/Douglas & McIntyre.
