In discussing the level of enjoyment some people may or may not have for reading, or the ability to "see the pictures in their heads," we should remember that a variety of learning disabilities can have a great impact on readership. Many folks immediately think of dyslexia, but there are other examples, such as Nonverbal Learning Disorder. The person with NLD has great difficulty making sense of the nonverbal world: inference, figures of speech, implicit meanings, visualizing abstract thoughts within the mind. Everyone simply does not have the ability to visualize. Yet there can be great desire to participate in the literary world. As teachers, librarians, authors, editors and other professionals, we have the challenge to increase our knowledge about learning differences and seek to engage readers at new levels. Susan Plewa
