Hi all,

Regarding popular culture, Ann M. Martin, and the BSC phenomenon: If you have a chance to read the full entry in _Contemporary_Authors_, you could find it interesting. There are a lot of things that gel with the popular culture discussion on this list, including how an original concept of a four book series to be published over one year morphed into a "mini-publishing industry"- with a television series, movie, spin-off titles, and so forth. The article is quite extensive and detailed and certainly illustrates the evolution of the books and tie-ins.

Meanwhile, about who wrote what...

 From _Contemporary_Authors_, Gale, 2003:

"Contrary to the way that most multi-volume children's book series are produced, Martin did much of the writing for both of the main series, rising at 5:30 each morning to start her writing day and completing nearly two books each month. As the number of series grew, however, it was impossible for Martin to keep up with the flow of books, and other writers were brought on to help write some of the titles. But after fourteen years both Martin and her publisher, Scholastic, were ready to move on to new projects."
