Reading vs Story

Uma writes: "I think illiterate (terrible word) people the world over know that reading is about the privilege they don't have, and deserve." Thank you for those words, Uma. They give me a ray of hope in what has been rapidly developing into a kind of gloomy depression. They remind me that the world contains many societies, not just the one I am familiar with, and that elsewhere people see the value of the written word I love, even as I try with limited success to convince reluctant teenagers that what they put in their minds is as important as what they put on their bodies.
Still a curmudgeon, Sally Derby (although my daughter tells me that curmudgeon traditionally applies only to men, not women. So consider my usurpation of the word my attempt to bridge the gender gap.)
