What I was trying to get at in my posts of last week is that I believe that others in the world who are unable for whatever reason to read books as we do, have other means to have the same experience Deam describes below. I love to read, books cause me to reflect to think and to stretch myself all the time, they give me tremendous joy; however, I believe these same wonderful experiences that I have with books can be had with other vehicles of story too. Certainly our busy culture causes us to crave solitude and time to reflect. I am up early, but not because of stress, but rather because I'm relaxed --- it is summer and life is relatively stressfree for this school teacher. I actually have time to read and reflect, something I find much harder during the school year. However, I keep thinking beyond my own experience to those who live differently than me. Who may have no telephone at all and for whom books are not a part of life while music, dance, story, and other vehicles for reflection are. Think of Ashley Bryan's amazing presentations --- they get me reflecting, thinking, dreaming, wondering as much as any book does.
