Actually Meg, Ann M. Martin only wrote a few of those books. The rest were ghostwritten. She did have final approval on them before they went to press. And the idea wasn't hers. Her editor called her and suggested the series.
And when it comes to deceiving children, Animorphs and Goosebumps were ghostwritten as well. So you might call it a pop culture thing after all.
