I'm so glad that several of you have reassured me that teachers DO still read to kids in class -- and parents, too! It's so important -- as you all all know. And this has been a fascinating discusison, especially also as to the pros and cons of TV watching and its effect on reading ability and enjoyment.
One thing I remember from my own childhood with great joy and nostalgia -- sitting with my family on the porch of an evening, taking turns reading aloud. That was before we had a TV, but I suspect we'd have done it even with one.
(And oh, how it helped with that summer reading list, on which were occasionally
"BORING" books!)
