GLBT Literature "Hallmarks"

I personally did not like "LUNA," though the very reasons I didn't like it might be why others think of it as a good book: It puts a transgender teen up front and personal, "in your face." I actually felt that Liam-Luna was a character forced into the story...in order to put a message across. I didn't like him/her as a character, found him/her to be quite self?ntered. His sister, however, won me over totally. I cried/emphasized/laughed/feared alongside her as she was deeply affected by her brother's narcissistic journey to self-discovery. As painful as it may be for a transgender teen to navigate culture's waters...it's much more painful for those around him/her as they're affected by that person's journey. That, I feel, is the strength of LUNA.

If I were to recommend a Peters book on GL topic I would recommend "KEEPING YOU A SECRET." There are plenty of stereotypes going around on what GL issues/relationships are all about. This book, softly and without trying, by the power of Peter's storytelling, delivers one of the most poignant love stories I've ever read. I was truly impressed with looking at a love story from this point of view.... words, thoughts and feelings I thought were solely the domain of heterosexual relationships were painted in the pages of this book in such a natural, flowing way, with no agenda to deliver, just a story, a love story.... but one that invites the reader to revisit stereotypes and then decide.
