I guess it gives away a surprise of the novel, but Sonya Sones's One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies pertains to our discussion in a subtle way. It was one of the two most popular books with my 8th-grade girls at the end of the school year. (The other was Contents Under Pressure by Lara Zeises.) A novel in verse, it's about a lot of things, but underlying the whole story, narrated by a teenaged girl, is why her father abandoned the family and has never been in touch with her.
