I'd say, not very subtle, but perhaps others would find it obscure. It's interesting that the book didn't make much of a splash when it came out, in spite of the fact that Chris Raschka generally gets a lot of attention for his books, as do gay-themed picture books over all, even mediocre ones, because they're still such a novelty.

Although it wasn't Raschka's intention (I heard him speak about the book two years ago), it can just as easily be read as having a pro-segregation theme, which is the risk you take, I guess, when your book has a message that you leave open to interpretation.
