Laurina, thanks for providing the message from Bobbie Combs and Sally Lindsay of Two Lives Publishing. Another picture book they published was an excellent biography of Harvey Milk by Kari Krakow, entitled "The Harvey Milk Story." I think this is one of the best gay-themed books published to date for the younger set.
Small, independent presses have been pioneers in the area of lgbt-themed picture books. I'd like to see them move away from comic-style art (one of my friends refers to "Daddy's Roommate" as "Archie and Jughead Have a Baby") and be a bit more adventurous with the artwork, and I hope this will happen over time.
An area we've yet to see explored in literature for younger kids is transgender, although there are certainly lots of children and their families dealing with gender identity issues. There was a book back in the 1970s published by Lollipop Power Press called "Jesse's Dream Skirt," about a preschool-aged boy who wanted to wear a dress to daycare. That's the only one I've ever seen, and it's impossible to find these days. I was kind of hoping Dar Williams first venture into children's books earlier this year would be a picture book developed from her song "When I Was a Boy," which has the kernel of a good picture-book story.
