I frequently recommend The Birchbark House as a read-aloud to the many parents who come to my public library looking for excellent books to share with their children. Often these adults are readers themselves, and have read or at least heard of Louise Erdrich's adult novels. I always tell the parents that the story has some very sad parts that are accurate depictions of what the protagonist's life might have been like. I have always had good feeback from these families. It's a real treasure of a book: beautifully written, moving, and memorable.
