Several people have emailed off list to ask about the anecdote about representation in history books vs. stories her family told, which I included in an email about Mildred Taylor. To clarify, the situation was mentioned in the short biographical link I'd included in the original email:
For the firsthand and besthand of those circumstances, please see Mildred Taylor's autobiographical essay included in Something_about_the_Author, Autobiography Series, Volume 5, Gale (Detroit, MI), 1988, pp. 267(6.
For Ms. Taylor's take on the censorship of her writing, and who her work is for, please see her acceptance speech (Mildred Taylor's words delivered by her cousins, Sonia Taylor and Sharon B. Taylor), when she won the ALAN Award for Significant Contribution to Adult Literature in 1997. She does talk about her young readers. (She also addresses censorship in that speech.) Here is a link to the text: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/ALAN/spring98/taylor.html
I hope this helps!
