Will you be in the Chicago are sometime this summer? If so, and if you'll be there with children - or even if you don't have a child with you - plan to go to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Even if you now think you can't be there yourself, tell others about the opportunity to see an exhibition of Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson's original works of art for two picture books, "To Be a Drum" and "The Shaking Bag." The artwork will be on view between now and September 6 in Gallery 16, Kraft Education Center (Lower Level, next to the Grand Staircase), at the Art Institute of Chicago.

"Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson transforms things from her everyday life into works of art. Found objects, gifts from friends, and personal items from special people make up the pallette from which she creates stunning worlds of fantasy and lore. "To Be a Drum" written by Evelyn Coleman
(Albert Whitman, 1998) is the story of African ancestors and how they were sustained through hardship and change, using the drum as a metaphor for the life spirit within each of them. Ms. Robinson's mixed-media rag paintings reflect the rhythm of the drum as the story unfolds. Watercolors with pen and ink propel the story of "The Shaking Bag" written by Gwendolyn Battle-Lavert (Albert Whitman, 2000), which tells of a poor woman with a big heart who, after taking care of others, is finally taken care of herself." (from the Kraft Education Center brochure)
On June 13 the Family Programs staff will present some of Ms. Robinson's stories. This program is free and registration is not necessary, but children must be accompanied by an adult. The Kraft Education Center cannot accept groups for family programs. All other Family Programs and Exhibitions are also free with museum admission.
The Art Institute of Chicago is located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Adams St. (111 S. Michigan), on the eastern edge of Chicago's downtown Loop. Museum hours: Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. 10:30 - 4:30; Tues. 10:30 - 8:00; Sat. & Sun. 10:00 - 5:00. General admission on Tuesdays is free to all; on other days museum visitors must pay something, and that amount is voluntary. Children five and under are free. The Metra has $5 weekend passes with unlimited rides; up to three children under 12 may ride free with a fare-paying adult.
For more information or questions about the exhibition, the program on June 13, or other Kraft Education Center programs for families, contact Family Programs (312?7q61). For information about Art Institute exhibitions, see www.artic.edu/aic
