I recently read Richard Peck's The River Between Us and thought it was wonderful. It's actually a kind of double historical fiction starting with a boy about to visit some relatives he's never met around 1900. Then the story switches to a narrative by one of the older characters about her life at the beginning of the Civil War. It's set in an area of Southern Illinois that I'm familiar with so I loved the description of places I know. In addition, though, I also got so much more about life in New Orleans from another of the characters. This book deals with so many big ideas: war, racism, loyalty. And all with a surprise ending!
