Speaking as a parent, I try to get my 5th grade daughter to read historical fiction (since I work with children's books, we always have a flow of books in our house). When graded assignments and tests come home, I can see what they're covering in school, and I look for a historical ficiton book to go with it. I still read aloud a couple nights a week, and she reads the rest on her own.
Recently, we were reading a fictional book about the Civil War and when the character in the book mentioned the president, my daughter told me Abraham Lincoln was president then. Then she corrected herself and said America had 2 presidents during the Civil War. We talked about which president the girl was referring to and then went back to the story.
So, I can see the benefits of historical fiction. It does reinforce what was learned in the classroom. But if the book isn't interesting, my daughter won't finish it (I never force her to read a whole book, I'll just recommend another, like I said, we have many books around the house). And while she prefers fantasy and popular series like Amber Brown or Judy Moody, she has finished many "historical fiction" books.
She just read the Midwife's Apprentice in less than a week and loved it.
As a side note, she really doesn't like the diary format and she's never finished one Dear America book. Even when I read them aloud, I can tell she's not interested. I love historical fiction (but of course, I'm a grown up), but I think it has to be a great story to hold a young mind. They're not trying to learn, just be entertained, and if they learn something too, all the more bonus.
