One of my favorite historical fiction writers is a fellow Minnesotan, William Durbin. His books are mainly about the northern MN and Great Lakes area-voyageurs, logging camps, homesteading, etc., but they do a great job at evoking the general feeling of the frontier. Boys love them! Some I especially enjoy are:
Broken Blade Song of Sampo Lake Blackwater Ben
Other favorites: The Art of Keeping Cool, Janet Taylor Lisle An Acquaintance with Darkness, Ann Rinaldi Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague, Geraldine Brooks
Joyce Sidman
