PS Just want to mention that Europe seems to have a long tradition of comics for elementary aged kids. Asterix, Tin Tin, and all. Years ago I went to a fabulous comic book museum in Brussels and I'm a huge fan of the recent animated feature, "The Triplets of Belleview" that looks very much in that European comic tradition. I also have at hand one of my favorite childhood books from my time in German, "Petzi Auf Der Robinson Insel"
(Petzi on the Robinson Island) Further described as a "Bildergeschichte" or literally "picture story". This series consists of stories in a soft cover with tons of little pictures with captions below. No speech bubbles, but very comic-book like.
