Susan, The poor bindings on graphic novels are an on-going problem. Graphic novels from CrossGen seem to be especially problematic in my library as they usually fall apart after the first check-out. We are often able to glue and repair them, but that is only a temporary solution. One of the library vendors that I use, Mackin provides a pre-binding service for all paperbacks including graphic novels. Occasionally, they will not be able to re-bind a book if the artwork runs to far into the gutter. You can also get pre-bound editions of select titles from Demco and Permabound. Addtionally, large companies such as Marvel and DC are offering a wider range of titles in hardback editions.
I think the best long-term solution is to contact the publishers directly. If they hear enough complaints from all of us, I think they will begin to improve the bindings on graphic novels.

After having my first graphic novel fall apart, I now send them all to our woodworking instructor. He drills 5 to 6 evenly spaced holes along the crease that forms when the cover is opened. He uses a drill about the size of a pencil lead. I then take heavy thread (or fishing line or dental floss) and sew up and down through the holes and securely knot the thread. THEN the entire cover (and my needlework) is covered with book tape. We've had no more graphic novels fall apart!!
