Hi Amy,
Oh definitely. I neglected to mention that I didn't learn to read Japanese until I was fifteen (1976). I haven't read Princess Knight so I can't comment on how girls/women are portrayed there, but I do know Tezuka was very much an idealist (in a good sense) and he tried to address numerous social issues in his work.
