graphic novels

Graphic novels are an area that we've only just started adding recently. The key to finding out where to start and what to get is having a person or two who knows something that you can ask for opinions. My local "consultant" I discovered after he repeatedly read the few we started with; he may only be 13, but he knows what is out there, and was more than happy to take home a catalog, go through the whole thing, circle his recommendations, and then talk to me about what they were, what he'd heard and some of the differences between the series. Sure, some of his recs were based solely on what he wanted us to get so he could read them, but at least he gave me a point to start off from.

From there I've done some on-line research (and yes, no flying, no tights is a wonderful site!).

But the best resource for we Mainers is a fellow named Rick who owns Casablanca Comics down in Portland. He KNOWS his wares, and is more than happy to help the librarians in this state. My first purchase from him, he asked what ages I was aiming for, acceptable content and such, and then looked at my choices, making a few substitutions based on which ones he thought would make the best initial reads for our collection. Considering they are hardly on the shelf, I say he did well, and we're all anxiously awaiting his next shipment! Incidentally, I do believe someone mentioned that he and someone else are teaming up to write a guide for Neal-Schumann.

One of the big problems seems to be that when lists of recommendations are printed up, many can already be out of print, for example the Akiko/Menace of Relliapor series... I hate to give away this secret, but I really wanted them so....go Ebay!

So, bottom line - if you don't know, find someone who does who can help! And remember, the searching can be half the fun.
