Hello Good Colleagues. I'm writing to encourage you to come to Orlando early for the ALSC preconference on early literacy. The ALSC Web site now has program and registration details. Among the fabulous speakers scheduled are Mem Fox and Rosemary Wells, two passionate advocates of reading aloud with young children. The two authors of Einstein Never Used Flash Cards, who were a huge hit at the IMLS conference last fall, will speak about early learning and the latest research. Two dynamic library directors, Ginnie Cooper of the Brooklyn Public Library, and Kathleen Reif of St. Mary's County (MD) Library, will share what they have learned as long-time advocates for the public library's role in early literacy work.
Afternoon breakout sessions will be full of practical information. Topics include setting up national programs such as Reach Out and Read at your library, low budget programs that can be easily duplicated, the latest on state and national early literacy initiatives such as ALSC's and PLA's Every Child Ready to Read _at_your library, and Much More!
The preconference will begin with a kick-off reception on Thursday evening, June 24, from 7-9. This will include a workshop by Jane Marino, author of Babies in the Library, who will share some of her sure-fire rhymes and songs for babies and toddlers.
Plan on joining us on June 24 and all day June 25 for great information, inspiring ideas, and creative brainstorming with passionate folks who care about the important role public libraries play in early literacy work!
