I am so proud to say that I'm in Vaunda's writing group. Those of us who saw her struggle with endless revisions of this text, reviewed successive takes, and even, yes, dreamed about this story during the time she was writing it, know how much this book is a work of love. I think Bootman's sensitive craft lies in how deceptively seamless he has made the art and words appear. Credit must also be given to Carolrhoda Books, for the successful mediation between words and images that constitutes the best kind of picture book editing. Almost to Freedom is a beautifully authentic work, and I feel privileged to have been along for some of its journey.
