As a person very interested in parts of the world where they may think a bit differently than we do, I've always loved the Batchelder books. My experience with children leads me to think that many of them in elementary school are not really aware enough of the world to understand the fascination with the foreign.
I have found every Batchelder winner worth reading. I haven't had too much luck getting kids to read them. Librarians should probably try to interest teachers in reading them aloud, as they are worth it. Unfortunately, some teachers prefer the popular books that they know will go over well, rather than being adventurous. But there are others out there who would take a chance.
