I agree with Susan--"Librarians should probably try to interest teachers in reading them aloud, as they are worth it. "

A number of years ago, I was introduced to the work of Susie Morgenstern because of the Batchelder Award. I read Secret Letters from 0 to 10 and A Book of Coupons aloud with great success. I teach young children, so it was nice to have novels for a slightly younger audience that happened to come from another country.

Off topic, a bit-This is not the Batchelder, but I always look for the books from R&S books, Kane/Miller, Groundwood and other publishers who regularly publish picture books in translation. My students enjoys the different senses of humor--both verbal jokes and visual humor--that seem to mark many of these titles. They are starting to recognize some of the Swedish illustrators (Peter Cohen and Olof Landstrom's Boris's Glasses just cracks them up as does Edvall and Gimbergssons's The Rabbit Who Didn't Want to Go to Sleep) and love the gentle art of Chih-Yuan Chen
(On My Ways to Buy Eggs.) Just today I read Good Dog, Paw! by Taiwanese illustrator and author Chinlun Lee. (marvelous for the dog lovers in Nashville...and Taiwan)
