The Pura Belpre Award is given to the outstanding book by a Latino author,a and outstanding book by a Latino artist.
The award is currently given every two years, so the 2004 award commitee was looking at books published in 2002 and 2003.
Winner of the Pura Belpre Author award was:
Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez. Alfred A. Knopf, 2002.
There were two Belpe author honor books:
Cuba 15 by Nancy Osa. Delacorte Press, 2003.
My Diary from Here to There / mi diario de aqui aasta alla by Amada Irma P?rez. Illustrated by Maya Christina Gonzalez. Children's Book Press, 2002.
Winner of the 2004 Belpre Illustrator Award was:
Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book illustrated and written by Yuyi Morales. Chronicle, 2003.
There were three Belpre illustrator honor books:
First Day in Grapes illustrated by Robert Casilla. Written by L. King P?rez. Lee & Low, 2002.
The Pot That Juan Built illustrated by David Diaz. Written by Nancy Andrews-Goebel. Lee & Low, 2002.
Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez illustrated by Yuyi Morales. Written by Kathleen Krull. Harcourt, 2003.
One of the thing that strikes me as I look at this list is the number of new voices and visions recognized. Yuyi Morales, Nancy Osa, and Nancy Andrews-Goebel are among those being recognized for their initial forays into children's literature. The subjects of these books also represent a range of Latino perspectives and experiences.
What are your thoughts on the books recognized by the Belpre committee?
