Here is updated information from Anne Pellowski concerning the extended deadline for South Africa travel decisions.
At least 17 people now plan to travel with Anne Pellowski's group. Anne also just told me that anyone who is part of the Delta frequent flyer program can receive credit for the miles.
You'll find the previous message I sent on 2/1/04 pasted below Anne's new message, so all the information will be in one place. NOTE: All questions must be directed to Anne Pellowski; contact her exactly as she outlines in her 2/1/04 message.
You're encouraged to forward my message to anyone who might want to know about these travel options. This trip is open to anyone who is interested, regardless of whether s/he is a member of one of the organizations represented on the USBBY Board.
Best, Ginny Moore Kruse (One of the 17+ travelers with Anne Pellowski)
NEW MESSAGE FROM ANNE PELLOWSKI (2/27/04) Dear USBBY colleagues and friends,

Go off to Botswana, Swaziland on a Kruger safari, or wherever you wish, as some trip takers are doing OR 29 Aug. Take bus to Thohoyandou, arriving in afternoon - these are very comfortable - similar to long-distance Greyhounds here. Evening at Venda Paramount Chief's palace for dancing and storytelling. 301 August - Join us for one day of our workshop, or go on a trip to schools and one of the unusual toy libraries set up for poor children and AIDS orphans; second day can also be sightseeing in Venda area. Check your guidebooks to see the interesting possibilities. 1 Sept. 9:00 am - take bus to Polokwane (pietersburg) Those going on a Kruger safari will continue on and come back to P. on Friday, 3 Sept. Those staying with me will help with workshop and do sightseeing in P. area. Sat. Sept. 4 - return to Jo'burg via bus in time to catch 3:00 pm plane to Cape Town Sept. 5-9 - IBBY Congress in Cape Town Sept. 10 lv. 3:00 pm for JFK arrive sept. 11, Sat. at 7:10 am or, stay for post congress tour and lv. Sept. 15 at same time, arriving Sept. 16 at 7:10 am in JFK
The cost is going to be approximately $1,450. This includes all taxes, including all airport departure fees.
If you go on the trip with my group, the cost for 7 nights of hotels, the buses, meals, etc. will be approximately $600 - more if you need a single room. If you go on the safari, it will also be slightly more.
You must let me know immediately if you are interested, send a $100 check [deposit], and then send me payment in full by May 17. I will give you the exact amount by e-mail just before payment is due. The $100 is fully refundable, but will NOT be credited to your ticket. It will be refunded to all after trip has been completed. You have until May 17 to cancel, with no penalty. After that, there is a penalty, which gets larger and larger as the departure approaches. If you cancel after July 27, there is no refund of the fare - only of the $100 booking fee. Trip insurance is probably a good idea.

IBBY CONGRESS TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY
Consider attending the IBBY Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, Sept. 5-9, 2004.
Information about the IBBY Congress can be found at the IBBY Congress website http://www.sacbf.org.za/ , or you may contact Jay Heale, South African Children's Book Forum (SACBF), P.O. Box 847, Howard Place - 7450 South Africa; Tel. +2721 - 532 05 55 Fax 671 29 02; E-mail: sacbf at worldonline.co.za . For general questions about the Congress, you may contact IBBY Administrative Director (Basel, Switzerland) Elizabeth Page ibby at ibby.org or USBBY staff persons Alida Cutts acutts at reading.org and/or Barbara Miriello bmiriello at reading.org . The registration deadline is April 1.
The American Library Association is one of four patron members of USBBY, and ALA has appointed representatives on the USBBY Board of Directors. During the IBBY Congress the 2004 Hans Christian Andersen Awards will be presented. The Congress provides a rare opportunity for informal dialogue with our counterparts from across the world who share our interests in literature, librarianship, literacy and children.
Here's an economical way to travel to South Africa. (This information is also attached as a Word doc.) For a $100 deposit, you can arrange to travel to/from South Africa with Anne Pellowski who is an ALA member, world traveler, and experienced participant in countless previous IBBY Congresses. The rate for this itinerary will be approximately $1,300. The schedule: Leave from NYC* on August 27 for Johannesburg. On Sept. 4 leave Jo'burg for Cape Town. Leave Cape Town for NYC* on Sept. 10.
The airfare for each person in the group includes the stop in Jo'burg and the on-going fare to Cape Town. Other expenses will be approximately
$500 for the full week prior to the IBBY Congress for hotels, meals, and bus travel to the Venda and Sotho areas. The full payment is due June 27.
Each person is responsible for arranging and paying costs of connecting flights to/from NYC.* Individual cancellation is possible until July 27, but there will be a $150 fee. (If there is not a minimum of ten travelers, the group will be canceled 90 days prior to departure, and the deposit will be fully refunded.) Travel insurance is a consideration. No free fares are allowed, and Anne will pay for the flights just like everyone else.
Options about how to spend the week prior to the IBBY Congress include:
# 1 - Going with Anne to the workshops she leads in Thohoyandu: Aug. 291 and Polokwane (Pietersburg): Sept. 1-3. No one will be required to observe or participate in Anne's workshops about making cloth books. However, if you're interested, find out more from Anne.
# 2 - Being a tourist on your own during that week and visiting places such as the Kruger Game Park. You will make your own arrangements. Most travel guides sold in the U.S. contain information about side trips. Anne can provide contact information for travel agents in that region.
Some individuals will prefer to participate in the official post-Congress tour, or travel in other ways after the IBBY Congress ends. All costs associated with post-Congress activities will be extra. For an additional $100, it's possible to return from Cape Town on Sept. 15 and still be considered part of the original group. No deviation is allowed on the outgoing trip.
FYI: The cheapest [individual] rate quoted to Anne by Northwest-KLM and Delta-South African Airways to Anne was $2,200, and that did not include a stop in Johannesburg. One of the Northwest-KLM group rates quoted in November takes almost a full day longer because one must fly first to Amsterdam. Anne is making plans with Delta and South African Airways.
Vera B. Williams, Malore Brown, Marilyn Hollinshead and Ginny Moore Kruse are among the 12 people who have already made plans to travel with Anne a week early and then attend the IBBY Congress.
If you wish to travel with Anne's group, send a deposit check to Anne Pellowski as soon as possible, but no later than March 1. Along with the check for your $100 deposit, send Anne information about your preferred days of travel & length of stay. You must decide upon one of the options for the first week no later than March 1.
Anne's address for U.S. mail is: 819 West Broadway, Winona, MN 55987. Write an e-mail message to Anne, or telephone her (507E4u84, evenings) with your questions. When you write an e-mail message to Anne arpell6 at aol.com, put SOUTH AFRICA IBBY in the Subject Line of your message.
* It's possible that the U.S. city for departure/arrival will be Atlanta, rather than NYC.
