Yesterday Senator John Kerry visited the fourth annual Cesar Chavez Youth Forum in Sacramento, Calif., in honor of Cesar Chavez Day, and read aloud from Harvesting Hope a biography of Chavez by Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Yuyi Morales (Harcourt, $17).


Invited as keynote speaker, illustrator Morales noted that Kerry "held the book all the time, and when it was his time to speak, he said something like, 'I am here today to tell you about this book.' . . . It was a total surprise for me! At the moment, I was a mere spectator. He was surrounded by tons of people, reporters, cameramen; I didn't even try to go and meet him. But it made my day--he showed our book to the world!"
