The only Printz Honor book that I have read thus far is A Northern Light, which had been recommended as a favorite book of 2003 in December.

I loved this book and read it almost in one sitting. I was amazed at the number of
"issues" that were incorporated into this historic fiction/mystery/romance. The themes ranged from social/class distinction to racial discrimination to women's rights. Mattie's struggle to decide between duty to family and her own dreams of continuing her education is a powerful one. As is the decision she has to make between love and her dreams. How many women can relate to her dilemma, "Does he love me, or my prime acreage and rich soil?"

One of my favorite aspects of the book was the use of a vocabulary-journal entries at the beginning of each chapter. High school teachers could get some inspiration from this literary device.

I highly recommend the author's website: www.jenniferdonnelly.com. It is visually stunning. Her "story inspiration" page would be great for students to read.

Thanks to the person who recommended this book. I have a new favorite genre.
